In 2009 Dr. Joan M. E. Gaither created the Black Watermen of the Chesapeake quilt, a documentary story quilt detailing the lives of the many African American men and women involved in the history and culture of the Chesapeake Bay. It highlights the men and women who dedicate themselves to the Chesapeake Bay through their work, communities, or their love and concern for the waters of the Chesapeake Bay.

Dr. Gaither is inviting the public to come and share their Chesapeake Bay experiences on this quilt as a way to help document the many stories of life on the Chesapeake. People may participate by adding stitches and messages to the quilt, sharing stories, identifying people important to African American life on the Chesapeake Bay, or bringing photographs of their experiences of the Chesapeake Bay for possible inclusion on the quilt.

Four public quilting sessions will be held. Prior quilting and/or sewing experience is not required. Open to all ages. Dates, times, and locations are listed below.
